Juicing It Up

My husband and I happened upon a great documentary called, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. It is a story of a man who wakes up one morning and realizes that he is getting older, he is completely out of shape, and has an autoimmune disease that he keeps under control with steroids. In an act of desperation he decides to embark on a 60 day juicing journey.  He loads up his car with a generator and a juicer and sets out to drive across america vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for 60 days. Have I peaked your interest...if so go and check out the trailer at http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/

The film is very inspiring. So inspiring that my husband thought that he would like to try a juicing fast. After discussing our plans with the nutritionist at my job he gave me some great advice. He said to start off slow and don't buy a juicer until you know for sure that this is something you would and could do. He even let me borrow an old juicer he had just so we could try it out.

I have had the juicer for about a week now and my three year old has been the one bugging me about wanting to make some fresh juice. So, after looking online for some kid friendly juicing recipes, I picked up some apples and carrots at the grocery store and we tried our first batch of fresh juice. Here is how it went.

We used 2 medium carrots and 3 medium red delicious apples.

I washed them and then cut the apples down to fit into the juicer and removed the core

Then we turned on the juicer and we started shoving the pieces in.

My little guy was a pro. He and I could open up a juice stand tomorrow!

It was a beautiful orange color!

I poured just a small amount for my little guy and some for me. My guess is that the two carrots and 3 apples made about 1 cup of juice. I forgot to measure when I was done. I was too excited to try it.

Here is my little guy holding his juice up proudly. He ended up drinking the whole glass! I was so proud of him for trying it!

I really liked the juice and I am excited to try some more recipes. I am hoping to go a little greener the next time around! Now, to get the husband to try it!
